What is Vaping?

Vaping heats cannabis to a temperature that releases cannabinoids and terpenes as vapor — without combustion. Because there's no fire, there's no smoke, tar, or most of the harmful byproducts associated with burning plant material. A 2007 study published in Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (Abrams et al.) found that vaporized cannabis delivered equivalent THC levels to smoking but with significantly reduced carbon monoxide and tar exposure. The result is a cleaner, smoother experience with more pronounced flavor.

Types of Vaporizers

Dry Herb Vaporizers — Heat actual flower in a chamber. Available as desktop units (Volcano, Arizer) and portable devices (PAX, Mighty). Best flavor and full-spectrum experience. You control the flower quality directly.

Oil Cartridges (510 Thread) — Pre-filled cartridges that screw onto a battery. Convenient and discreet. Quality varies widely — look for lab-tested, full-spectrum or live resin cartridges.

Disposable Vape Pens — All-in-one devices with built-in battery and pre-filled oil. No charging or setup. Use and recycle when empty.

Concentrate Vaporizers — Designed for wax, shatter, or other concentrates. Some dry herb vapes include concentrate inserts.

Temperature & Terpenes

Vaping's biggest advantage over smoking is temperature control. Different compounds release at different temperatures:

320–356°F: Light effects, maximum flavor. Releases pinene, caryophyllene, and some THC. Best for microdosing and tasting.

356–392°F: Moderate effects, balanced flavor. Releases limonene, linalool, and most THC. The sweet spot for most sessions.

392–428°F: Strong effects, less flavor. Releases myrcene and remaining cannabinoids. Approaching combustion territory above 430°F.

Research in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research (Sexton et al., 2018) confirmed that terpene preservation increases significantly at lower vaporization temperatures.

Quick Compare

Vaping vs Smoking

Vaping
  • No combustion, less harmful byproducts
  • More flavor (terpene preservation)
  • Temperature control
  • Less odor, more discreet
  • Slightly different effect profile
  • Device required (upfront cost)
Smoking
  • Combustion produces tar and carcinogens
  • Some terpenes destroyed by high heat
  • No temperature control (600°F+)
  • Stronger, more lingering odor
  • Familiar, traditional experience
  • Minimal equipment needed
Myth Buster
×

Vaping is completely harmless because there's no smoke.

While vaping avoids combustion and its associated toxins, it is not risk-free. A 2019 NASEM (National Academies of Sciences) report concluded that while vaporizing cannabis is likely less harmful than smoking, long-term effects are not yet fully understood. Cartridge quality matters — the 2019 EVALI outbreak was linked to vitamin E acetate in illicit cartridges, not regulated cannabis products. Always use lab-tested products from licensed producers.

Choosing the Right Vaporizer

For flavor chasers: Dry herb vaporizer with precise temperature control. Nothing beats the taste of actual flower at low temperatures.

For convenience: Oil cartridges or disposable pens. Pocket-sized, no grinding, no loading, minimal odor.

For home sessions: Desktop vaporizer. Superior vapor quality, better temperature precision, no battery concerns.

For concentrate fans: E-rig or concentrate-compatible portable vape.

Budget consideration: Cartridges have low upfront cost but ongoing cartridge purchases. Dry herb vapes have higher upfront cost but only require flower.

Cartridge Safety: What to Look For

Not all cartridges are created equal. Protect yourself by checking for:

Lab testing: COA available showing potency AND contaminant testing (especially residual solvents and heavy metals).

Ingredients: Should contain only cannabis oil and cannabis-derived terpenes. Avoid PG, VG, PEG, MCT oil, or vitamin E acetate.

Hardware: Ceramic or quartz heating elements are preferred over cotton wicks. Lead-free materials.

Source: Licensed producer with traceable supply chain. Avoid black-market or unbranded cartridges — the 2019 EVALI crisis resulted in 2,807 hospitalizations, primarily from unregulated products (CDC).
