THC & CBD: The Two You Need to Know
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychoactive cannabinoid. It's what produces the euphoria, altered perception, and relaxation most people associate with cannabis. On product labels, you'll see it listed as THC-A% — the raw form that converts to active THC when heated.
CBD (cannabidiol) is non-intoxicating and is associated with calming, anti-inflammatory, and anti-anxiety effects. The World Health Organization's 2018 critical review found CBD to be generally well tolerated with a good safety profile. Some products contain both THC and CBD for a more balanced experience.
Ways to Consume
Smoking (joints, pipes, bongs) — Effects in 1–5 minutes, last 1–3 hours. The most traditional method.
Vaping — Heats flower or oil without combustion. Smoother, less odor. Similar onset to smoking.
Edibles — Effects in 30–90 minutes, last 4–8 hours. Processed through the liver, producing a different, often stronger experience.
Concentrates — Highly potent extracts (wax, shatter, live resin). For experienced consumers only.
For beginners, smoking or vaping flower gives you the most control over dosing because effects are felt quickly.
What to Expect Your First Time
Everyone's first experience is different. Common effects include: mild euphoria, heightened senses (music sounds better, food tastes richer), relaxation, giggles, and increased appetite. Some people feel little to nothing their first time — this is normal and documented in clinical research. A 2021 study in Journal of Cannabis Research noted that first-time users often require 2–3 sessions before consistently perceiving effects, possibly due to the endocannabinoid system needing initial sensitization.
The Golden Rule: Start Low, Go Slow
This is the single most important piece of advice for any new consumer. Take one small puff if smoking or vaping, then wait 15 minutes. If you're trying edibles, start with 2.5–5mg of THC and wait at least 2 hours before considering more. You can always consume more — you can't consume less. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), inhaled cannabis effects peak at 15–30 minutes, while edible effects can take up to 2 hours to fully manifest.

Safety Basics
Don't drive. Cannabis impairs reaction time and coordination. Wait at least 4–6 hours after consuming before operating a vehicle.
Know your source. Always buy lab-tested products from reputable sellers. Untested products may contain pesticides, heavy metals, or mold.
Avoid mixing. Combining cannabis with alcohol intensifies both substances unpredictably.
Not for everyone. If you're pregnant, nursing, under 21, or have a history of psychosis or severe anxiety, cannabis may not be appropriate for you. Consult a healthcare provider.
