What is Potency?

Potency refers to how strong a cannabis product's effects are likely to be. It's primarily determined by the concentration of THC-A (which converts to active THC when heated), but the full picture includes other cannabinoids, terpenes, and your individual biology. We label our products as Mild, Medium, or Strong to give you a quick read on what to expect — but understanding what drives potency helps you make smarter choices.

How Potency is Measured

Third-party laboratories test cannabis flower for cannabinoid content using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The result is reported as a percentage of dry weight — for example, 24% THC-A means 240 milligrams of THC-A per gram of flower. These labs also test for contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals, and mold. Every batch we sell comes with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) so you can verify the numbers yourself.

The Sweet Spot: Medium Potency

Medium potency flower (20–28% THC-A) is where most regular consumers find their groove. The effects are noticeable and satisfying without being overwhelming. This range offers the widest variety of strains and terpene profiles, giving you the most options to match your mood. According to a 2020 study in Drug and Alcohol Dependence (Bidwell et al.), consumers using moderate-potency flower reported similar satisfaction levels to those using high-potency products.

Myth Buster
×

If you want stronger effects, you always need a higher THC percentage.

A 2020 study from the University of Colorado Boulder, published in JAMA Psychiatry, found that participants using 70%+ THC concentrates were not significantly more impaired than those using 16% THC flower. The researchers concluded that beyond a certain threshold, more THC does not proportionally increase effects. Tolerance, consumption method, terpene profile, and individual endocannabinoid system differences all play significant roles.

Did You Know (Stat)
20–28% THC-A is the range where most consumers find the best balance of effects, flavor, and value — without diminishing returns.

Start Low, Go Slow

Regardless of experience level, the most reliable approach is starting with a small amount and waiting to feel the effects before consuming more. When smoking or vaping, effects typically onset within 1–5 minutes and peak around 15–30 minutes (National Institute on Drug Abuse). If you're trying a new strain, take one or two draws, wait 15 minutes, and assess. You can always have more — you can't have less. This is especially important with strong potency strains where a little goes a long way.
